Sheetala Ashtami through the hands of two Bindhanis
Look at this photograph.......
No studio. No setup. Just bare earth, a sacred tree, and two Bindhanis as co_sister who know exactly what they are doing. This is Sheetala Ashtami — alive, unfiltered, and more beautiful than any styled shoot could ever be.
🌿 What This Image Holds :- The puja is not inside a decorated room. It is at the base of a tree — rooted in the earth, the way this tradition itself is rooted. The offerings are placed where the roots meet the soil. This is the Nagaur way well known beautiful village. Simple. Direct. Sacred. The puja thali sits to the right — sindoor, flowers, kesar, the small offerings of a woman who prepared everything the night before, because today, no fire will be lit.One Bindhani leans forward, the gota fringe of her bandhej odhani almost touching the stone idols and earth as she completes the ritual gesture. The other sits quietly beside her, gold bangles catching the morning light, her #kesariya odhani the colour of marigolds and faith.
Their hands are doing what their mothers' hands did. And their mothers' mothers before that....the #matriarch at its peak.
🪡 The Clothes That Carry the Culture :- See the vivid orange-red bandhej chunari — every white dot on that fabric is a knot someone tied by hand. Bandhej is patience made visible. It is also, not coincidentally, the signature textile of this very region.
The kesariya and rani odhani draped over the head of other Bindhani is not just modesty — in Rajasthani tradition, a covered head before the goddess is a language.
It says: I come with humility. I come with respect.
The gota border that frames the odhani? That shimmer is intentional — even in prayer, a Rajasthani woman is adorned. Because here, beauty is not vanity. Beauty is devotion.
And the bangles — stacked, golden, glinting, ivory color the traditional — They wore them for puja.
🌡️ Why No Fire Is Lit Today :- Sheetala Ashtami falls when seasons turn and heat begins to rise. The tradition of Basoda — eating cool, day-old food — is not folklore. It is body wisdom. Rest the digestive fire. Cool inflammation. Let the system reset.
Sheetala Mata asked for no cooked offering because she understood what the body needed before we had words for it. Our grandmothers were scientists. They just spoke in ritual.
