Bhadrapad Ki Teej – A Festival That Lives in Every Marwadi Woman's Heart
Share
Whenever Bhadrapad Ki Teej arrives, I don't just remember a festival—I remember my childhood.
I remember the colourful Leheriya sarees, the beautifully draped Marwadi poshaks, the sound of glass bangles clinking together, women singing Teej songs, and homes filled with laughter. Growing up in a Marwadi family, Teej was never only about fasting. It was about women—our stories, our traditions, our relationships, and the joy of coming together.
There's a beautiful saying every Marwadi girl grows up hearing:
तळाई में सातूं देख्यो, दित्यो जैसो टूट्यो।
Every time I hear these words, they take me back to the warmth of our elders, who preserved traditions not through only books but through rituals, folk songs, and blessings.
For married women, Teej is a prayer for the well-being and long life of their husbands. For unmarried girls, it is a heartfelt wish for a loving and compatible life partner. But beyond these prayers lies something even more beautiful—the celebration of womanhood.
The months of Sawan and Bhadrapad have always belonged to women. They are a time to visit our maternal homes, meet sisters, cousins, and friends, dress in vibrant colours, wear our favourite jewellery, and celebrate the bonds that make us who we are.
One tradition that has always touched my heart is Teej Udyapan. A Teejaniya, after completing her vow, lovingly gifts besan sattu, bangles, and other shagun to fellow Teejaniyas. These are not just gifts—they are blessings exchanged between women, carrying wishes for happiness, prosperity, and lifelong companionship.
